Mushrooms are not vegetables, because they have not photosynthesis. They live elaborating substances from dead beings (or in other cases, form living beings).
Their biologic structure is particular too. Their cells are actually long fibers, called ifae, made of a substance not present in the vegetal world, but present in certain animal structures.

Mushrooms that people eat are some ascomycetes and some basidiomycetes. But mushrooms are an enormous group which includes moulds and a lot of microscopic mushrooms. Some species are not completely understood and have been included in a group called 'imperfect mushrooms'.
Mushrooms have not a great nutritional value; they have some mineral salts, and those wonderful aromas that people love.
Some mushrooms contain poisonous substances. Some of them are deadly.
